#35mm film scanner for mac software#
Now, that’s not to say I’m getting pretty damn close! I use a programme by the name of VueScan and that’s all I’ll say on the software end of things as there seems to be lots of conflicting information on what the best software is lots of agreeing to disagree. As of writing this it has been 4 months of continuous learning and I still have no idea why some photos come out different. You’d think it was Boy George with the amount of drama and costume changes my scanner has. My one piece of advice to anyone that takes up the skill of scanning – get ready to lose all your hair and any loved ones! Because for all that is holy in this gracious life we hold there is no rhyme, reason or logic to why this hunk of plastic lives and breathes different personalities every time I turn the **** on. Like a kid on christmas day i wanted to use my new toy as soon as it arrived! Ignoring the advice of my friends and fellow photographers to read up and look at various workflows I dived right in. “Ok, I’ve got a scanner, why are all the photos different?” I guess the moral of the story is like with anything even remotely related to analogue photography – it’s a massive faff! Mill Trail – Fuji C200 Windows, Mac, Android.) Think of them as digital buses that carry information between hardware and software that allows them to communicate and work.

*Computer / Software driver – these little programmes act as links between hardware (eg Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam, Printer) and computer or other software (eg. I do not advise this as you should always be wary when using third party drivers! Alas, after a few evenings of cleaning and internet scrounging I was up and running!

As for the driver, I managed to get a reverse engineered one from a Chinese forum site. For the cleaning I followed Carl McMillan’s blog post about to take apart and clean a Canon Scanner: and I cannot thank him enough. Perhaps burnt dust?! Lastly, I needed a driver* that would run with a nearly 15 year old machine. The underside of the scanning glass was murky and filled with the previous owners attic and the scanning module itself somehow had some gunk on it. After a brief triage including some pokes and prods all that was needed was some TLC for the poor machine. That way I would be able to get acquainted a little quicker in case of any future domestics I would at least know my way around. It seemed sensible for me to spend less wonga and spend a bit more time fixing it up. Needless to say I don’t have that kind of money so I opted for something a bit cheaper. It has to be said – scanners are f*****g expensive! A popular mid-ranged film scanner is the Epson V600 and they can go anywhere from £150 to £250. Nottingham Contemporary – Ilford XP2 Super 400 I managed to pick up a fairly inexpensive second hand Canon CanoScan 5200F at the start of the year and while the results have been mixed – and still are – I hope some of my notes either help those thinking of starting or others with an insightful mind. With that in mind, scanning is by far the biggest beast to tame.

I talked a little bit in my last post about the philosophical battle in my mind when it comes to the authenticity of my analogue photography. Think of it like eating a really long piece of spaghetti where every couple of inches the sauce changes. A lot of rambling and tangents in this post I’m afraid.
